Choco pie wrappers, pigment powder, resin, and oil on canvas

”Sweet Box“ explores the Korean concept of affection (jeong 정情) through the symbolic Choco Pie jeong (情). A box of 12 pies is typically bought and shared with close ones, turning a simple snack into an act of care and connection. Buying Choco Pies is seen as a way of sharing affection, and the brand has commercialized this concept, making Choco Pies one of the symbols of jeong (情) in Korean society.
Inspired by the work “Gimjang,” I preserved the pie wrappers in resin and used small brushstrokes to fill the canvas. Each layer is applied, dried, and then overlaid with contrasting colors, symbolizing how jeong (情) is built over time through small, repeated memories and interactions.

홍연 紅緣 Tied by Red

“홍연 紅緣 Tied by Red” is the first piece in the Yeon 緣 series and focuses on the theme of romantic relationships. Inspired from the saying, “Destinies are tied by red threads,” the work offers a new interpretation of this idea. Rather than depicting a single thread connecting two people, the piece reflects the artist’s belief that relationships are formed through encounters with many people, where threads break, knot, and intertwine over time.
To visualize this concept, the artist used a deliberate process of drawing red threads in multiple tones with a small brush, layering them one at a time and allowing each layer to dry before adding the next. This repetitive method embodies the complexity and depth of connections, capturing the way bonds evolve and tangle, much like the unpredictable nature of love itself.

스쳐가는 인연들에 대하여 Passing Encounters

Among the countless encounters we have, most quietly fade into distant memories, barely leaving a mark. Yet, some endure, weaving through our past, present, and even future. Whether they are destined bonds, momentary coincidences, or challenging relationships, when we pause to reflect on all these connections, we start to see a beauty we may not have noticed before—a quiet, profound sense of affection: jeong (정情) shared between us.
This work is an exploration of those threads, a way to rediscover the meaning and beauty hidden in the connections that shape our lives.
