Multitude of love: nature symphony

Rippling Heart; 일렁이는 마음
Oil on Canvas

The painting Rippling Heart metaphorically depicts a moment of dramatic change within a once calm and steady state of mind. Using the invigorating movement of waves as a metaphor, the artwork portrays a significant internal transformation, reminiscent of the surging motion of ocean waves. The energetic and lively waves are expressed through the interplay of textures and strong contrasts. Infused with the energetic yet static essence of the artist's Korean sensibility, the painting reflects traditional East Asian painting techniques in an oil medium, creating a representation of ink-and-wash strokes.

Spring to Come
Twin, ink, and hanji-paper on canvas

Winter is also the season of waiting for spring and the blossoming of flowers in our hearts. To depict a winter tree blanketed with soft white snow, I attached twine onto five canvases, covered them with Hanji paper, and painted on top of them. My wish is that those enduring the winter of the heart will eventually be in full bloom, similar to colorful flowers adorning an endless green field.

Nature Symphony
Silkscreen

Nature Symphony is a silkscreen piece expressing love in everyday nature. The work captures the inherent sense of movement and motion created by nature, visualizing the pattern of reproduction and the repeated cycle of life through simple geometric shapes.

Purity
Oil on canvas, 31.4 x 39.3 in

Interpreting magnolia as a symbol of purity, I associated pure love with unconditional affection and the familial bond. The three magnolia flowers depicted in the painting represent each of my family members, while the use of a tone-in-tone combination of pastel colors conveys the softness of pure love. The overlaying brushstrokes and faintly painted magnolia symbolize formless, varying, and malleable love of magnolia.

Everlasting
Oil on canvas, 31.4 x 39.3 in

Emphasizing zinnia’s symbol, which are affection, friendship, and everlasting love, tone on tone combination was used to create a harmony of bright and vivid hues. A flower garden became the motive of the work, delivering the idea of how different colors of flowers create a resonance as a group.

Obsession
Oil on canvas, 31.4 x 39.3 in

Morning Glory represents obsession and unrequited love. Split-complementary combinations of vivid colors were used to emphasize the captivating mood of the flower language. The queen Grimhilde from Disney Snow White was used as a reference for the image of the painting, expressing the bitter-sweetness of obsessive, one-sided love. Unlike other paintings from the series, it is drawn with a strong outline, and the purple shadow smears into the bright green background, representing how jealousy spreads into people’s minds slowly, eventually staining the pure form of love to obsession.
